ABOUT TONIC ACUPUNCTURE

Founded in 2017 by Sandra, Tonic Acupuncture has grown mostly by word of mouth, of which Sandra is eternally grateful for her advocates. She started out in renting a room 1 day a week in Total Physiotherapy of Longridge and also within Alderbank Physiotherapy of Grimsargh.  She enjoyed her time there and she still receives referrals from these clinics and she will often send patients for exercises as part of their recovery.

In 2018 Tonic Acupuncture moved to have it's own space in the Longridge Business Centre, this was a wonderful space. As the business grew, Sandra had dreams and aspirations to find a larger space to allow for group acupuncture clinics and to allow a closer link with other therapists. So in 2020, the business moved to its current location on Warwick Street in Longridge. For the first 3 years Janet Stevens was also an acupuncturist with Sandra, but she has sadly left now to do some amazing and exciting work in the student clinics at Northern College of Acupuncture in York. They are very lucky to have her and I know the students will benefit greatly from her teaching.

The clinic is a large clinic room (95 sqft) with beautiful room dividers to provide you with a scenic space to relax and unwind in. There is space for up to 6 bed areas, but currently there is just 2 very spacious ones set up. This allows for patients to relaxing whist Sandra is in consultations with another patient. Privacy is adhered with the screens and discussion done behind closed doors. If patients need attention though, Sandra is just a bell away.

During the night, the room is transformed into a wonderful space for classes such as Yoga and Qi Gong. Please do get in touch if you are interested in hiring this space for a group healing style workshop/class.

ABOUT YOUR TREATMENT

During your treatment, your practitioner will assess your condition with a range of diagnostic techniques, including asking questions, feeling your pulses, and looking at your tongue. This enables Sandra to discover what is the root cause of your condition.

Acupuncture looks to treat the body as a whole, after all our body parts and mind are all connected.

The first treatment is longer, normally 2 hours, and during this treatment, your practitioner will advise you how many sessions they would expect to see some changes within your symptoms. This forms the start of the treatment plan.

Acupuncture needles are used at specific acupuncture points to help reduce your symptoms. These are usually retained for 20+ minutes whilst you relax. If needed, other modalities such as moxibustion, heat therapy, fire cupping or massage may also be used alongside acupuncture to increase the effect of your treatment.

Acupuncture needles are very fine, single-use, sterile stainless steel needles. Most people feel very little to no sensation on insertion of the needles. Although there can be a dull pulling, tingling, temperature change or heaviness felt, this is not unpleasant and it is the feeling that the body is switching on your healing mechanism.

Sometimes there are immediate changes in how you will feel, but more often the changes occur over the following days and builds up over several regular sessions. These can be very subtle changes in the beginning, like being able to sleep better or your mood improving.

Side effects are rare, mild effects consist of some slight bruising or bleeding, some people feel tired after the treatment. We always advise trying to relax the day of your treatment and to drink plenty of water.

Occasionally some symptoms can worsen for 1-2 days after the treatment. This is usually a good sign and shows that your body is in repair mode, however, please remember that you should contact us or your GP if you are worried about symptoms getting worse.
